Understanding your child's diagnosis

Choose a language and a diagnosis to read a calm, plain-language guide — what it means, what helps at home, and how we help. Take your time.

Choose a diagnosis

Autism

A short guide — take your time. Choose the diagnosis below.

Take a breath
You've been given a word

A diagnosis can be a lot to hold. Take a breath. In the next few minutes we'll walk through what it means for your child — not what they can't do, but how they experience the world — and how we help.

What it is
Autism

Autism is a different way your child's brain takes in the world — sound, movement, closeness and change. The rigid, restricted or repetitive things you notice are how your child copes with a world that can feel overwhelming; it isn't caused by parenting, and your child has real strengths we build on.

The journey
The road ahead

A diagnosis isn't the end of a road — it's the start of understanding your child. First we understand how your child experiences the world; then we help them feel calm and safe; then we build skills on that steady base; and we keep growing. It's a marathon, not a sprint — but with the right support real progress happens, and you won't walk it alone.

Why
Why your child does what they do

When your child struggles, turns away, repeats something, or melts down, it usually isn't misbehaviour — it's their nervous system protecting them, or their brain and body working hard. Before any child can talk, play or learn, they must first feel safe and calm. We call this regulation, and it is the gateway to everything else.

Breathe in… and out. Calm comes first.

The pathway
Green pathway, red pathway

Watch for two pathways. In the green pathway your child is looking, listening, joining in — build on it warmly. In the red pathway they have turned away or locked into a loop — don't push; come alongside and join what they are doing. Joining their world draws their attention back to yours.

The environment
Change the world around your child

A calm, predictable, sensory-friendly world lets your child's brain settle and learn. Small changes do a lot — steady routines, a warning before things change, less noise and clutter, simple visual cues, and a quiet place to retreat to. Wherever we can, we change the environment around your child rather than force your child to change.

A calm, predictable space lets a child settle and learn.

At home
Do's and don'ts
Do
  • ✓Follow your child's lead and join their play
  • ✓Keep routines predictable — warn before changes
  • ✓Lower noise, clutter and demands when they're overwhelmed
  • ✓Celebrate small steps — connection before correction
Don't
  • ✕Don't force your child, or stop a habit that keeps them calm
  • ✕Don't pile on demands during a meltdown or shutdown
  • ✕Don't compare your child to others or to milestones
  • ✕Don't chase quick “cures” — steady, proven support wins
Why early
Why starting early matters

The early years are a window: a young brain builds new pathways most easily now. Steady, evidence-based support at this stage helps your child grow real skills — and prevents much of the anxiety, rigidity and avoidance that are far harder to unwind later. That is the purpose of early intervention.

Young brains build new pathways most easily now.

Getting to know your child
The BEST assessment

Everything in your child's plan starts here. BEST is our structured developmental assessment — a careful, whole-child picture of where your child is right now, across every area of development. It isn't a test to pass or fail; it's how we truly get to know your child.

We build the picture two ways: from what YOU tell us — you see your child every day, so your knowledge is the most important source — and from what the clinician observes. Together we look at each area and mark where your child is now, giving a clear map of strengths to build on and areas that need support. That map drives everything that follows — the plan, the report and the home videos — and we repeat BEST over time to measure real progress.

What to expect
  • •There are no right or wrong answers — honest, everyday examples help most
  • •It's about understanding your child, not testing or judging them
  • •Your knowledge as a parent is the most valuable part
  • •We repeat it over time to see what's working, and adjust

Your knowledge + the clinician's, across every area.

Our programme
The geniuslane early-intervention programme

Whatever your child's diagnosis, the way we help is the same — a clear, measurable programme built around your child. Here's how it works.

1
1 · The BEST assessment
We start with a structured developmental assessment called BEST. It looks carefully at every area of your child's development — not just the diagnosis — so we understand their whole profile: what's strong, and what needs support.
2
2 · Your knowledge goes in
You see your child every day, so your knowledge is essential. We ask you detailed questions about how your child communicates, plays, moves, eats, sleeps and copes — and that goes into the assessment alongside the clinician's.
3
3 · The algorithm builds the plan
Your child's scores across each area feed our algorithm, which matches them to exactly the right developmental protocols. The result is a plan tailored to your child's own profile — not a generic checklist.
4
4 · A report and videos you can act on
The plan becomes a parent-friendly report and a care plan of activities — and each activity comes with a short video showing you exactly what to do at home. Little and often is what makes the difference.
5
5 · It learns, and it's result-driven
You tell us what's helping (a simple 👍 or 👎), your clinician reviews it, and our AI learns and improves the guidance over time. We re-measure your child's progress, so we always know whether it's working.
Practical things that help
  • •Little and often at home beats occasional long sessions
  • •Keep it playful — connection first, then learning
  • •Consistency and routine help your child feel safe
  • •You don't need special equipment — everyday moments are the strategy
  • •Progress isn't a straight line; celebrate small steps
  • •Look after yourself too — a calm parent helps a calm child
Be careful
Treatments to avoid

Families are often offered treatments that promise a lot and are not backed by evidence. Some waste your money and time; some can seriously harm your child. We strongly urge you not to fall into these:

  • ⚠Any “miracle cure” or product that promises to make the condition disappear — there is none.
  • ⚠Chelation therapy — international (NICE) guidance says never use it; it can cause serious harm.
  • ⚠Hyperbaric oxygen therapy — guidance says do not use it for these conditions.
  • ⚠Stem-cell therapy or “transplants” — unproven, experimental, and can be dangerous.
  • ⚠Chlorine dioxide, “MMS”, or any bleach-based product — never give these to a child.
  • ⚠High-dose vitamins or supplements, including folinic acid, or medicines claimed to “heal” or “boost” the brain — use supplements only if your doctor finds a real deficiency.
  • ⚠Unregulated Ayurvedic or homeopathic remedies, or special exclusion diets (like gluten-free/casein-free) as a “cure” — no good evidence they help, and some can harm; change your child's diet only with your clinician and a dietitian.

We strongly suggest you do not try any of these. Before you start ANY treatment, supplement or diet, ask your geniuslane clinical team first — we will always give you an honest, evidence-based answer.

In line with NICE (UK) and other international guidance.
